The 7-hour training does not provide equivalence to the A1 license. It allows the driving of vehicles in category L3e (motorcycles) and L5e (tricycles) with an engine capacity not exceeding 125 cm3 and a power of 11 kW, but only on French territory. This distinction has direct consequences on insurance, driving abroad, and the actual rights of the driver.
A1 equivalence and 7-hour training: a confusion with concrete effects
We regularly observe confusion between the A1 mention inscribed on the back of the license and a genuine A1 category obtained through examination. The 7-hour training does not lead to the issuance of the A1 license: it generates a follow-up certificate that serves as a driving authorization, without changing the category listed on the title.
In practice, this means that the 7-hour training does not allow driving a 125 cm3 outside of France. Only holders of an A1 license obtained through examination (theoretical and practical tests) benefit from the European recognition provided by Directive 2006/126/EC. A French driver who has completed the training and is driving in Italy or Spain is at risk of being fined for lacking a valid license.
This point is rarely detailed in consumer guides, and to fully understand the rules for the B license for 125 cm3, it is necessary to distinguish between national authorization and license category in the European sense.
Seniority of the B license: the real calculation and pre-training
The requirement of two years of seniority for the B license is well known. What is less known is the possibility offered by the decree of December 17, 2010, to follow the training up to one month before the second anniversary of the B license. A driver with one year and eleven months of seniority can therefore register and validate the seven hours, then wait for the effective date to drive legally.
This pre-training window is useful for young drivers planning to purchase a scooter or light motorcycle before summer. We recommend checking the exact date of obtaining the license (date of issuance, not the date of passing the exam) as it is the one that counts for the calculation.

Particular case of the license obtained at 17 through accompanied driving
A driver who obtained their B license at 17 through AAC reaches two years of seniority at 19. They can therefore follow the training as early as 18 years and 11 months. No age exemption exists to go below this limit.
Exemption from 7-hour training: the three specific cases
The training is not systematically mandatory. Three situations allow for exemption:
- Holders of a B license issued before March 1, 1980, when the B license automatically included the driving of light motorcycles without additional training.
- Drivers who can justify insurance covering a two-wheeler or tricycle of category L3e or L5e between 2006 and 2011, even for a short period. An information statement from the insurer is sufficient as proof.
- Holders of an A1, A2, or A license obtained through examination, which already covers the category of the vehicles concerned.
The information statement is the only accepted document to prove the insurance period. A simple certificate is not sufficient. We advise requesting it from the insurer in writing, specifying the category of the insured vehicle and the exact coverage dates.
Technical content of the training and points of vigilance
The seven-hour training is divided into three distinct sequences, and their content deserves to be analyzed beyond the simple regulatory description.
Theoretical sequence and accident analysis
The first two hours cover theory, focused on the specific accidentology of motorized two-wheelers. The instructor analyzes risky situations (blind spots, intersections, roundabouts) based on real cases. This theoretical sequence is not a mere reminder of the highway code: it addresses the dynamics specific to two-wheelers (balance, braking, cornering trajectory).
Off-road sequence and balance exercises
Two hours of off-road training allow for working on low-speed handling. The exercises focus on balance, emergency braking, and evasive maneuvers. For a driver who has never ridden a two-wheeler, this phase is crucial: managing counter-steering and looking through corners cannot be improvised.
Real traffic sequence
The last three hours take place in traffic, with radio communication between the instructor and the student. The instructor evaluates the ability to merge into traffic, manage priorities, and adjust speed. No exam sanctions this training: the certificate is issued solely based on actual participation.

125 motorcycle insurance with B license: what insurers check
Insurance companies apply specific criteria to drivers of 125 cm3 holding only the B license. The main friction point concerns the bonus-malus: an experienced driver with a good coefficient on their auto contract does not automatically transfer this to a motorcycle contract.
The insurer systematically requires the 7-hour training certificate (or proof of exemption). Without this document, the subscription is refused or the claim is not covered. We observe cases where drivers circulate with a provisional certificate issued by the driving school, a document that has no legal value in case of a roadside check.
- The training certificate must be kept with the driving license during every trip.
- The vehicle registration certificate must mention the correct category (MTL for light motorcycle).
- The green card must explicitly cover the vehicle of category L3e or L5e concerned.
One last technical point often overlooked: the maximum allowed power is 11 kW, not just 125 cm3. Some 125 cm3 models exceed this limit due to their engine configuration. Checking the power on the registration certificate before purchase avoids an insurance refusal or an unintentional infraction.
